They are to have a full in-depth understanding of all SOC tiers, as managers synchronize the work of analysts of all layers and SOC engineers. In case of major security incidents, they orchestrate a response to them. Among other responsibilities, there are communications with the company’s or customer’s CISO, sometimes other C-level executives, partners, etc.

Technical skills are essential, as without them one can hardly expect to become the SOC manager, however, profound team management and crisis management skills become more important on this level than Tier 1, 2 or 3 skills as well as strong communication and project management skills.
